When John Ransom served as pulpit supply at Orient United Methodist Church in Ohio last fall, technology and outreach efforts were limited.

In December 2024, Ransom was appointed as a local licensed pastor to Orient UMC. The congregation wanted to grow their membership and were open to digital ministry. Ransom and the leadership applied for and received a Go! Grant from the United Methodist West Ohio Annual Conference.

To begin, the church installed Wi-Fi, set up a YouTube page to stream Sunday worship, and added a Zoom account for Bible study gatherings. The results were immediate. Weekly attendance rose to an average of 25, and membership doubled to 17, Ransom said.

With the creation of the digital ministry, Orient attracted worshippers from as far away as Arizona.

As the digital ministry grew, the church witnessed an increase in participation by young adults and youth and a widening in racial and cultural diversity, which influenced worship planning.

“As a congregation,” Ransom said, “we embraced a themed approach that includes traditional hymns, gospel, and Christian rock, ensuring that worship is meaningful for everyone, reflecting the richness of our faith community.”

In addition to its digital ministry, the church will add a Blessing Box to provide nonperishable food items for community members who are food insecure. Plans are also in place to upgrade the parking lot and accessible ramps.

“My vision for Orient,” the pastor said, “is to be a leader in the West Ohio Conference, setting an example of accepting individuals of all backgrounds regardless of race, culture, or financial status. As we grow and learn together, we will share the good news of Jesus Christ with the communities in West Ohio and beyond.”
