Over the past several years, Kamisamba Farm in North Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo, has become known as a leader in sustainable agriculture. One of their most recent achievements was having their maize (corn) seeds certified by the government for production and sale. This is a significant development not just for Kamisamba Farm, but also for the surrounding community. The project provides employment opportunities for locals, especially youth, as well as the opportunity to earn a steady income, contributing to poverty reduction and improved livelihoods. The initiative also stimulates local economic growth by increasing agricultural productivity.
As maize is a staple crop in Congo, increased production ensures a stable food supply for the community. In addition, the introduction of maize seed production at Kamisamba Farm enhances nutrition, since maize is a rich source of carbohydrates, fiber, and essential nutrients, contributing to improved health, particularly for communities that previously relied on cassava as a staple crop due to limited access to maize seeds.
On the growers' side, the project empowers local farmers by providing them with access to quality maize seeds, training, and technical support. Maize seed production at Kamisamba Farm also promotes sustainable agriculture practices, reducing the environmental impact of farming through tested and approved farming techniques. By using locally adapted maize varieties, farmers can grow more maize that is more resilient to climate change.
Under the leadership of United Methodist Missionary & Agricultural Specialist Lorraine Charinda, the initiative is being replicated on four other church farms in four different districts. This expansion of the initiative will allow other areas to benefit from Kamisamba's success.
