The West Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church supports a wide variety of mission partners, both local and global, in advancing our common mission to 'make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.' Each month, we will join together in praying for our siblings doing mission and ministry around the world.
June: Freedom Schools
Each summer, hundreds of students in West Ohio participate in a Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School, a six-week program dedicated to increasing literacy in students who have fallen behind in their studies. Beyond this, CDF Freedom Schools aim to help children fall in love with reading, increase their self-esteem, and generate more positive attitudes toward learning. By hosting CDF Freedom Schools, United Methodist churches play a key role in expanding the opportunities for students to participate. - Week 1: All People Freedom Schools and Asbury North Freedom School in Columbus.
- Week 2: Covenant Freedom School in Springfield and CDF Freedom School of Licking County.
- Week 3: Monroe Street Neighborhood Center Freedom School in Toledo.
- Week 4: Lima Area Freedom School and Grace UMC Dayton Freedom School.
