In the 1980s, following the brutal Khmer Rouge regime that killed 2 million Cambodians, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) became involved in refugee assistance and the reconstruction of Cambodia. The first Methodist congregations in Cambodia opened in 1992 through the Methodist churches of Switzerland and France. In 1998, the first United Methodist missionaries were sent to Cambodia, and a United Methodist Mission Center was established. In 2003, the Methodist Mission in Cambodia was commissioned with five participating Methodist agencies. Now fully autonomous, the Methodist Mission in Cambodia continues its journey toward becoming an Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.
